MeadWestvaco and Autism Society of America Launch 2008 ASA Autism Awareness Cambridge Planner ASA and leading packaging solutions firm MeadWestvaco Consumer & Office Products Group announced they have partnered to design an autism-themed Cambridge Planner in honor of this April's National Autism Awareness Month. The Planner will go on sale at 1,000 Wal-Mart stores nationwide starting April 1. With this Planner, MeadWestvaco and ASA hope to promote awareness about this fast-growing neurological condition, which affects 1 in 150 births. The Planner was specially designed by ASA for parents and caregivers who have to manage the many informational and scheduling challenges of caring for an individual with autism. Features include a specialized notes page with space for care provider contact information, current prescriptions and a checklist of important documents, as well a page of stickers for doctors' appointments, support group meetings and other important events throughout the year. The planner also includes general information about the disorder, early signs, and how to find help and support.

"Adolescent Artists with Autism." Corrie Burdick, a doctoral student in Art Education at Syracuse University, is seeking participants for a study of Adolescent Artists with Autism. In this study, Corrie seeks to describe the experiences of adolescents with the label of autism as they produce art in inclusive classrooms. Participants will be observed about 5 times in art class as they create art. Corrie also hopes to talk with the artists themselves and those around them that support their art making. Preschool Recreation Program. A recreation based educational program for preschool age children with developmental disabilities offered by Maryann Martin. The class will follow a structured schedule and will consist of art, music, games and crafts to teach colors, numbers etc. Wednesday mornings from 9:00am - 10:00am at the new Village of Manlius Recreation Building. Anticipated start date is October 30. Session will run for 6 weeks and will continue to run for 6 week periods thereafter. Cost: $15.00 per child (includes accompanying adult) for residents and $30.00 for non-residents, for the entire 6-week session. Schwallie Family Scholarship Program. The Organization for Autism Research (OAR) is delighted to announce the Schwallie Family Scholarship, established in 2007 to support qualified individuals with autism or Asperger Syndrome in the United States pursuing post-secondary education. Beginning with the spring semester 2008, OAR will present one award of $3,000 in each of three categories: 1) Four- year undergraduate college or university; 2) Two-year undergraduate college, and; 3) Trade, technical or vocational school. These will be one-time awards for any recipient. Applications must be submitted by midnight, September 28.

A specialized curriculum brings out students' natural musical sense by playing familiar songs BY EAR with simple, easy-to- navigate chords. The chords produce a full sound and can be broken up in various rhythms and patterns to produce sophisticated styles. This avoids the complication of traditional reading by presenting fewer stimuli and tackling skills one at a time, breaking a song down into its components. Highly intuitive melody diagrams provide a visual guide to the ups and downs of the melody.
Autism Speaks Launches YouTube Channel. Autism Speaks has joined with YouTube to create AutismSpeaksVids, a dedicated channel to help promote autism awareness online. AutismSpeaksVids will host exclusive expert interviews, autism media coverage, ground-level fundraiser footage, advocacy efforts and more. The channel will draw from the submissions of the online community to bring a broad and varied look at autism and the individuals and families it affects.
